Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Fork for mashing
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • 9×5-inch loaf pan
  • Oven
  • Wire rack for cooling

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas mashed
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ banana sliced for topping

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray.

Mash the Bananas

  • In a large bowl, use a fork to mash the ripe bananas until smooth and creamy.

Mix Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar until well combined. Add eggs and vanilla extract, and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth.

Add Dry Ingredients

  • Add sour cream, baking soda, and salt to the wet mixture. Sift the flour, then fold it into the wet ingredients until just combined.

Fold in Chocolate Chips and Walnuts

  • Gently fold the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts into the batter.

Pour into the Pan

  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. For added flavor and presentation, place banana slices on top of the batter and sprinkle extra chocolate chips if desired.

Bake

  • Bake the banana bread for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If it starts browning too much on the top, cover with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes.

Cool

  • Let the banana bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For the perfect banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts recipe, avoid overmixing the batter to keep it moist and tender.
Using very ripe bananas brings out a natural sweetness and stronger banana flavor. Toasting the walnuts before adding them enhances their nutty taste.
Also, be sure to let the bread cool a bit before slicing to help the flavors settle and make cutting easier.
